NOW OBAMA WANTS YOUR 401(K)

WND

NEW YORK ? Two years ago,?as WND reported, the Obama administration was proceeding with a novel way to finance trillion-dollar budget deficits by forcing IRA and 401(k) holders to buy Treasury bonds by mandating the placement of government-structured annuities in their retirement accounts.

Remarkably, those financial professionals specializing in private retirement savings and the U.S. citizens investing in private retirement plans now face the possibility the Obama administration and its allies on the political left will impose rules and regulations that effectively abolish the private retirement savings and investment markets.

Recent evidence suggests government officials continue to eye the multi-trillion dollar private retirement savings market, including IRAs and 401(k) plans, eyeing the opportunity to redistribute private retirement savings to less affluent Americans and to force the retirement savings out of the private market and into government-controlled programs investing in government-issued debt.

TrackBack - The Direct Mail Man

An overall 2.57% United States Postal Service rate postage rate increase is scheduled to take effect on January 27th, 2013.

The interesting thing about postage rate increases is that they are typically not distributed equally across all classes of mail. As a result trying to determine exactly how the increase will impact you can be quite confusing.

Confused1
The purpose of this short article is to break down how the rate increase impacts the different classes of postage. As a bulk mail professional, I'm most interested in the impact on letter-sized pieces and Every Door Direct Mail.

Each year, the USPS is allowed to raise rates. As long as the proposed rate increase falls within the rate of inflation, there's no need to for approval from the US Congress or any other entity.

Every Door Direct Mail: The rate increase for Every Door Direct Mail is over 10%! Wow! Postage for Every Door Direct Mail retail has increased from 14.5 cents to 16 cents apiece. This is shocking to me. When the program was first introduced postage was just 14.2 cents apiece and then increased to a modest 14.5 cents. I'm concerned that the USPS might be pricing itself out of the market with this its fastest growing program, and I'm frankly very disappointed with this decision.

First Class Letter-sized Mail: Rate changes to first-class mail always seem to get the most attention because at some point or another, everyone has to purchase a stamp and mail a letter. Here?s the impact:

  • Postage for letters that weigh 1 ounce or less will increase 1-cent to 46 cents.
  • It will also cost you an extra penny to mail a postcard; the rate increases from 32 cents to 33 cents.

Penny
If you want to avoid having to think about the postage increase for individual mail pieces, it's probably a smart idea to stock up on forever stamps. Unfortunately, there's no such thing as forever stamps for bulk mail.

First Class Presort Letter-sized Mail: First of all, there's a lot of confusion about first class presort mail. It's a discounted form of first class mail; even though it's a type of bulk mail, the mail receives first class treatment.

To take advantage of first-class presort, you need to have a minimum of 500 pieces of mail. For letter-sized mail pieces, the postage is typically 10 cents less per piece. As far as the rate increase goes, rates for letter-sized first class mail pieces will increase on average about 1 cent apiece (between 2.7-2.9%).

Presort Standard Letter-sized Mail: This is the most common class of "bulk" mail. Unless you're a nonprofit, you probably mail your marketing materials at this rate.

Postage for letter-sized pieces mailed using this class are increasing on average about half a cent apiece. From a percentage point-of-view this amounts to somewhere between 1.4% - 2.1%. Essentially this is a kinder price increase than what you'll experience with first-class presort.

Nonprofit Letter-sized Mail: Unfortunately, there's no good news for US-based nonprofit organization who rely on bulk mail for their fundraising. On average, letter-sized nonprofit mail will increase about 3.25%. This is actually higher than the average increase and again a big disappointment, and most likely a representation of their collective lack of clout with the folks tasked with this decision.

Despite extreme growth with online marketing activities by nonprofit organizations, on average, direct mail marketing still accounts for the majority of funds raised. This will be an especially painful increase for charitable organizations.

Pennies
In summary, it seems like the biggest losers with this rate increase are nonprofit fundraisers and small businesses who rely on Every Door Direct Mail to attract customers to their businesses. Clearly the USPS has a lot of challenges, but each time rates are raised, the USPS is incentivizing its most loyal customers to find alternate communication vehicles for their customers, prospects and donors.

If you have questions about which bulk mail options make the most sense for your organization, I hope that you'll please contact me for help.

Weight Vest and SandBell? Training for Football

By Sam Dowd

As many football coaches have looked to provide their programs with innovative resistance training regimens, certain athletic institutions have turned to expensive, bulky, and ultimately worthless machines built to work select muscle groups through non-functional movement patterns. Conversely, more astute football programs throughout the country have turned to a central Texas company for simple, affordable, and versatile training tools designed to take their game to the next level.

Hyperwear, with their signature SandBell and Hyper Vest PRO weight vest products, has transformed football strength and conditioning programs for the better. While it is beyond the scope of this blog to discuss all the possible training applications for football, some practical and easily applied techniques are warranted to fully appreciate the impact that the SandBell and weight vest can have on a football training program.

Many players and coaches have used weight vests to burn more calories and seamlessly add additional weight when doing any type of strength or cardio exercise. Incorporate the Hyper Vest PRO into your sprint training to develop powerful speed gains. Utilizing a weight vest during training can mean the difference in your speed when it counts during a game. You can also wear the PRO vest during work on any kind of incline to further tax the lower body muscles and prepare the cardiovascular system for the rigors it will endure during a game.

saggital leap Weight Vest and SandBell? Training for Football

Transverse leap in the Hyper Vest PRO

Additionally, you can use the added resistance in a multiplanar plyometric regimen to activate hip muscles responsible for explosive movements or quick changes in direction. An easy entry into plyometric training with a weight vest is a simple vertical leap. Bring yourself into a deep squat, and power through your hips to explode into a jump. Land with soft knees and repeat. Upon completing the vertical leaps with the weight vest, you can transition into bi or uni-lateral leaps in any number of planes. Sagittal weighted plane leaps will activate a greater number of fibers in the gluteus maximus. Frontal weighted plane leaps will activate additional fibers in the gluteus medius, allowing for quick cuts and greater hip stability in lateral movements. Transverse weighted plane leaps will serve to fire the piriformis and additional deep hip muscles responsible for keeping the hips stable in any rotational movements. In terms of resistance for any of these exercise progressions, the Hyper Vest PRO can be tailored to provide varied weight levels, so you can find a size and weight that works for you.

Using the SandBell in conjunction with weight vest training will undoubtedly lead to monumental gains in lower body and abdominal strength that are vital to the success of any football player. While the football training possibilities are endless with a tool as versatile as the SandBell, a brief outline of the potential training applications is warranted to appreciate the impact this product can have on your football resistance training program.

A great way to introduce yourself to SandBell training is to incorporate the tool into squats or lunges. Starting here is a reasonable means by which your abdominals and hips can become accustomed to the dynamic resistance that is inherent in the SandBell.

Once you master SandBell squats and lunges in the sagittal plane, try incorporating multiplanar SandBell moves with your basic lifts in order to activate additional muscles. A squat or lunge with a SandBell rotation will engage the muscles through the midsection that are responsible for rotational movements common in football. Through training with the SandBell, the hips and abdominals are required to work in an integrated and sequential fashion, and in turn create more explosive power that translates to the field more readily than any other piece of strength training equipment on the market today.

sandbell slam 500x333 Weight Vest and SandBell? Training for Football

SandBell Slam

And of course, no Hyperwear blog on football training is complete without mentioning the acclaimed SandBell Slam! As previously stated, two of the primary goals when training in any football context is to develop additional power through the hips and strengthen the abdominals. By incorporating the SandBell Slam into your football training, you are priming your body to build explosive hip and core strength from the top down, while utilizing the SandBell?s dynamic resistance, as well as ground reaction forces, to tax your muscles in a way that is not possible using conventional, static strength training equipment. While it is best to start with a slam in a base stance through the sagittal plane to master the movement pattern, incorporating multiplanar slams and slams coupled with movements such as lunges will continue to build strength through the hips and core in a three dimensional fashion, and will translate to significant performance increases on the field.

The Lowdown On The Empower Network Home Based Business

If you have been trying to make money online it is highly likely you will have already encountered the large amount of hype surrounding Empower Network already. In today's article we are going to examine whether this home based business lives up to the expectation it creates, as well as looking at what type of person is best suited to it.

Most companies in this particular industry fail to stay in business long-term, so it is very important that you take a good look at a company before you make a potentially big decision.

The first year of any business is the most difficult. If you can get through that, you are usually in a good position to build for the future. Sadly for most online businesses, they don't treat their company as serious as someone who is running a high street business or a clothing line. They go for the whole 'next big thing' approach and, as a result, tend to have a very short life expectancy. So how does today's opportunity stack up?

When looking into any opportunity in the MLM or direct sales industry, there are three key factors which you need to look at before joining in any form. They're detailed for you here.

* Products and services.

* What is the earning potential from an affiliate's point of view?

* The different forms of membership.

Most companies in this industry tend to over-focus on the affiliate side of their business and neglect the products and services. They know that the main reason most people are joining is to build an income, so they play to that crowd. However, it gives non-earning members no reason to pay their membership fee and, as a result, you see the common domino effect which has every paying affiliate slowly dropping out from the ground upwards. Companies are starting to pay a little more attention to the services they provide and, usually, they will now include the option to join purely as a member for the product package if it is strong.

The products of any home based business tend to be what make or break the entire company. The services provided here will either greatly appeal to you or be completely unattractive. As a member, you unlock your own sub-domain with a Wordpress installation. This acts as an authority blog.

It offers a blog which holds 'authority' status. Basically, this means that the main website of the company is frequently searched online and, as a result of it's popularity, you are able to piggyback that level of importance for your blog posts.

Whether you deem that to be worth $25 per month, of course, ultimately depends on how regularly you intend to use it as well as what type of content you'd be publishing. Despite holding 'authority' status, your blog is not going to suddenly dominate all kinds of search results and you will still need to work hard on building your business, despite the huge hype on the main website.

If you decide to use the option of the affiliate plan your monthly membership fee increases from $25 to $44.95 in total. This is something you should take some serious time over, because $20 is a lot of money to throw away each month if you have no plans to actually promote the affiliate side of the business.

Most members in Empower Network fail to get the most from it simply because they joined purely to make money online and totally neglected the products they received. The affiliate plan is not groundbreaking and you can find many others which offer a similar compensation plan, so your best chance of success with this particular program is to determine just how important those products could be for you, depending upon what you are trying to achieve.

Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart Returning for X-Men: Days of Future Past

Bryan Singer has tweeted some exciting news regarding X-Men: Days Of Future Past, with the director confirming that old hands Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will be returning to the fold.

Singer broke the news on the social networking site before also confirming the return of Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult.

How the two veteran?s will fit in remains to be seen, although the comic-book source material deals with alternate narratives, with part of the story taking place in a dystopian future where the mutant population is being terrorised by the Sentinels.

Kitty Pryde time travels from said future to warn the X-Men, which might be how McKellen and Stewart will be able to share the same film as Fassbender and McAvoy.

In any case, it will be nice to see the two old-stagers back in action, particularly if they get to share a few scenes together. X-Men: Days Of Future Past opens in the UK on 18 July 2014.

Dockem Koala iPad & Tablet Wall Mount

By Eugene Kim

There are plenty of stands out there for propping up iPads and other tablets for watching videos and other uses. But not every space has a nice flat surface for a stand, and in some cases you might prefer to mount your tablet to a wall. The Dockem Koala iPad & Tablet Wall Mount ($19.99 direct) lets you do just that, with a dead-simple installation process that takes just seconds. ?

This wall mounting system is about as simple as they come. You get two plastic brackets that hold your device in place (pairs are sold separately in either chrome, black, or white finishes), two 3M Command Strips, and an alcohol prep pad. Each bracket measures 3.5 by 0.75 by 0.75 inches (HWD), with vented accents along the sides and a lip along the bottom that holds your tablet in place. Under the bottom lip is a small hook for cables.

Though it's made primarily for the iPad, from first-generation all the way up to the most recent fourth-gen?models, the Dockem Koala works with any tablet or smartphone that measures less than 0.4-inches thick. The two brackets aren't connected, so you can use them with any variety of devices, as long as they don't exceed the 0.4-inch maximum thickness and 5-pound maximum weight.?I tested with an iPad 2?, which fit even with a Smart Cover attached, and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1)?. Neither was a perfect fit, but held securely when properly installed to a normal painted wall, and didn't obscure any of the screen. The all-plastic construction is a little flimsy feeling, but the tabs didn't exhibit any flex. The cable hooks were also great for keeping charging cords within reach at all times.?

Installation is as simple as attaching the included 3M strips, holding the two tabs against the bottom corners of your tablet, and then pressing firmly against a wall. You just need to be sure you everything is level before you affix the strips. You'll also want to make sure the tabs are pressed as close to your tablet's edges as possible for the most secure fit. The 3M strips are rated to hold up to 5 pounds each, so today's tablets, all of which weigh much less, are no problem. Removing the Dockem Koala is equally easy, requiring a simple pull on the bottom flaps of the 3M strips. That's important, since you'll have to remove the adhesive to correct alignment or adjust for a new device. You can't reuse the strips, but 3M Command Strips are available all over for under $5.?

There are a number of useful applications for the Dockem Koala. During the test period, I used the mount on the wall next to my bed, turning my tablet into a small TV/alarm clock, freeing up precious space on my tiny nightstand. The Wallee system?also has a wall-mount component, but you'll have to screw the wall mounts into place, and you'll have to buy a special case for your device.?The plastic construction feels a little flimsy, and you need to work to get a precise fit, but if you want to mount your tablet or even smartphone on a wall, the Dockem Koala is a simple solution that will only set you back $20 and a few seconds for installation.?

NFL Power Rankings 2012 Week 13: Skidding Vikings losing ground

The Minnesota Vikings are no longer being viewed as a top 15 team in the league following a disastrous loss to Chicago in Week 12.

Losers of three of their last four games, the Minnesota Vikings continue their mid-season slide down the power rankings of a number of top pundits from around the web.

Despite starting the year off at 4-1, Minnesota has fallen back to Earth in recent weeks to reach a 6-5 mark. SB Nation's Joel Thorman believes part of this has to do with the fact that the Vikings did not play Chicago or Green Bay earlier in the season, forcing him to drop the Vikings down two spots to No. 17 overall in his latest rankings.

CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco puts some of the blame on quarterback Christian Ponder. Prisco gave the Vikings the No. 17 spot in his rankings this week, but believes it's up to Minnesota's star quarterback to get this team back on track. "The fast start is being done in by an inability to throw the ball down the field," he said. "Christian Ponder has to do more."

Though they dropped down two spots from No. 14, the Vikings still managed to come in at No. 16 this week according to ESPN.com's updated rankings. The Vikings are ranked one spot behind a 5-6 New Orleans team, and exactly seven spots away from a 7-4 Green Bay Packers squad that sits just one game ahead in the standings.

Star-Spangled Christmas parade to be held Saturday

CONYERS, Ga. -- This year's Conyers Hometown Holiday Parade has a patriotic Star-Spangled Christmas theme.

Floats decked in red, white and blue will travel from Rockdale County High School to the Rockdale County Courthouse at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1. The parade will celebrate U.S. armed forces and love for the country.

Parade participants and attendees will be encouraged to do their part to help local families in need.

"A new tradition we're starting this year is encouraging parade participants and spectators and tree lighting attendees to bring canned goods and participate in a food drive to benefit the Rockdale Community Food Bank," Conyers Main Street manager Monica Coffin said in a statement. "It's important to be able to give back to those that need help and food on the table, especially at this time of the year, and this is our way to celebrate the community's extraordinary spirit of giving."

Trucks will be parked at the courthouse and high school to accept donations. Another container will also be placed at the county ice skating rink.

PFT: Seahawks CB Sherman denies taking PED

St Louis Rams v Arizona CardinalsGetty Images

It sounds like rookie quarterback Ryan Lindley will get another shot? to start for the Cardinals, after his four-interception debut.

But as with all things Cardinals quarterbacks this year, that comes with an asterisk.

Cards coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday that Lindley would start again if Kevin Kolb wasn?t healthy, making it reasonable to wonder if John Skelton will ever see the light of day again.

Two of Lindley?s picks were returned for touchdowns in the Cards loss to the Rams, their seventh straight after a 4-0 start.

?Yes. We stay with Ryan,? Whisenhunt said of the non-Kolb condition, via Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. Listen, let?s start this thing off by saying you can?t have those interceptions. But in the first half, I thought he did a really nice job. He moved in the pocket, was decisive, managed it, made some good throws. We had three scoring drives in the first half, 17 points and over 200 yards of offense, possession time, was good on third down. I felt that we did a lot of good things, even with the pick-six.

?And the first pick-six, that was a mistake in his read. That can happen. The one in the second half, you have to learn from those. He made a bad decision. That?s what you have to see, can he learn from that? There was nobody more upset about than him, especially after the game. He was torn up because he knows he can?t do that.?

In Arizona he can, because they?re running out of options.

Asked if Kolb might be ready to return from a rib injury this week, Whisenhunt said he wasn?t sure yet.

?I don?t know where Kevin is health-wise,? Whisenhunt said. ?He?s making progress but as far as being ready for a game, that?s something we can?t determine until we see where he is Wednesday.?

Short of Kurt Warner coming back, it?s hard to imagine how any shuffling of the current deck chairs is going to matter that much.

TeachMoore: Confusion Abounds on Teacher Evaluations

As I was going through my blog reader this morning, I came across a fascinating juxtaposition.?

First, part of the ongoing series in Hechinger Report on the new evaluation system that has become law in neighboring Louisiana. The article notes:?

In English, math, science, and social studies, teachers will be measured on their students? progress on existing state tests. But Louisiana school districts have broad latitude when selecting the exams that will be used in subjects without standard state tests. In some cases, district officials are letting teachers choose or design the assessments on which they will be judged. In other cases, school boards, superintendents, or principals are picking the exams without consulting or even notifying teachers.[emphasis mine]

State Superintendent John White said state officials recommended a few possible exams in subjects like foreign languages. They also offered guidance on acceptable learning targets for students, and advice as to how administrators can use those targets to decide whether an individual teacher is ?effective.? But they felt that it would be ?a mistake to impose a test.?

?Our philosophy is that local leadership should be empowered,? he said.

That last phrase is only comforting if you have competent and responsible local leadership. I'm thinking of the school district in which three of my grandchildren attend school, where the entire school board is appointed and not one member has or has ever had a child attend the public schools.?

Just above that was this post from one of the Teacher Ambassadors at the U.S. Department of Education explaining the Department's official position on use of standardized testing in teacher evaluations. Marciano Guttierrez, teacher from Mountain View, California notes that:?

At a?speech?to the National Council for Social Studies, Mr. Duncan stated, ?Just to be 100 percent clear?evaluation should never be based only on test scores. That would be ridiculous. It should also include factors like principal observation or peer review, student work, parent feedback. It should be designed locally?and teachers should be at the table to help design it.? The Department?s work on educator evaluations has thus been to promote multiple measures to elicit a well-rounded perspective on one?s craft and to encourage districts and schools to primarily use these tools as a means for quality professional development. This thinking was also captured in a?speech?that the Secretary made to Baltimore County teachers this past fall....

...As a previous Teacher Fellow with the Hope Street Group, and in my current work with Race to the Top states, I have seen a variety of state-developed approaches and strategies that aim to meet this vision. I have come to realize that the strongest evaluation systems have been developed with robust teacher input at every stage of the process.? These evaluation systems, which are designed and improved with the practical insight of teachers, use test scores as only one of multiple measures of effectiveness, therefore allowing teachers of students like mine, to demonstrate quality teaching in ways that transcend test scores alone.

So why all the confusion? Why are so many places trying to develop teacher evaluations as if there are no guidelines, no models, and no professional educators to help design them? How is the teacher evaluation process developing where you are?

Black Friday online sales top $1 billion

15 hrs.

In a positive sign for the U.S. economy, shoppers took advantage of deep discounts?both online and in?stores over the?Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Black Friday?online sales topped $1 billion for the first time, according to?comScore, which measures online behavior.

Amazon.com was the most-visited retail website on Black Friday. Wal-Mart's website was second, followed by sites run by Best Buy, Target and Apple, comScore noted.

E-commerce accounts for less than 10 percent of consumer spending in the United States. However, it is growing much faster than bricks-and-mortar retail as shoppers are lured by low prices, convenience, faster shipping and wide selection.

More brick-and-mortar stores were open on?Thanksgiving this year, with retailers such as Target, Sears and Toys R Us joining in, while others including Wal-Mart and Gap either extended their operating hours or had more stores doing business.

Traditionally, stores had waited until Black Friday, the day after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, to make their big push. ?

U.S. retailers' sales over the four-day holiday weekend increased an estimated 12.8 percent, according to?a survey from the National Retail Federation.

More than?35 million Americans visited retailers? stores and websites Thursday ? up from 29 million last year,?according to the?survey. Despite concerns that the early?Thanksgiving hours would cut into Black Friday results, nearly 89 million Americans still shopped on Black Friday -- up?3.1 percent over the 86.2 million who shopped that day last year.

After years of belt-tightening in a tough economy, Americans this year were?apparently in the mood to shop.?An estimated 139.4 million adults visited U.S. stores and websites from Thanksgiving through Sunday, up from 131 million last year, according to?the National Retail Federation. Total spending for the weekend rose to $59.1 billion from $52.4 billion last year.

?From green beans to great deals, millions of Americans found time this Thanksgiving to make the most of retailers? promotions and enjoy a special family holiday,? said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay.?

When accounting for people who shopped on more than one day, the total number of visits to stores and websites was 247 million, up from 226 million last year. Shoppers also spent more --?$423 compared to?$398 last year.

The survey, conducted Nov 23-24 by BIGinsight for NRF, polled 4,005 consumers and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.6 percent. The number of shoppers for Sunday is estimated.?

Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.?

?There?s no question that millions of people were drawn to retailers? aggressive online promotions this weekend, making sure to research and compare prices days in advance to ensure they were getting the best deal they could,? said BIGinsight Consumer Insights Director Pam Goodfellow in a statement. ?However, with shopper traffic increasing at department, discount, and clothing stores over the weekend, it?s clear that consumers still recognize Black Friday as one of the biggest shopping days of the year, as they have for decades.??

It's not clear yet whether strong Black Friday sales will weaken growth on Cyber Monday, which has been the biggest e-commerce day in the United States in recent years.

"Cyber Monday will be a big day, but not as much of a big day as it has been in the past," said Mia Shernoff, executive vice president for Chase Paymentech, a payment-processing unit of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. "Faster broadband Internet connections in the office used to drive this. But now many consumers have faster connections at home and smart phones and tablets -- they don't have to wait."?

Information from Reuters was included in this?report.?

Are You a Helicopter Parent?

If you?re a ?Helicopter Parent,? hovering and rarely out of touch, think about joining the grassroots movement that advocates giving teens space.

As you have noticed, there are lots of hormonal and brain changes going on in adolescence. You may feel ambivalent about backing off at this time, especially if your kids are under stress or emotionally fragile. But during these growing up years, a wide range of emotions comes with the territory. And learning to let go is best for them and for you.

Here are some practical tips to try as you shift the responsibility from your shoulders to where it now belongs:

  1. Encourage your teens to make their own decisions. Be supportive but have them deal with the consequences themselves. Give fewer directions while they?re learning new problem solving skills. Although they?ll be faced with many choices, experience is a great teacher.
  2. Resist completing chores that they can do. As much as these may have been in your job description up until now, it?s time to pass the baton. See it as boot camp. Soon enough your teens will be off to college and the more competent they are, the more confident they?ll be.
  3. Think of reasons to support their growth. Focus on their positive qualities as you sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Remember that right now they need to learn to be more independent and accountable for their actions. And that includes working things out for themselves.
  4. Give up old habits of micromanaging. You have to do it sooner or later. When you continue to worry about what?s going on in their lives, you?re sending them messages that you don?t trust they can handle it on their own.
  5. Technology makes it too easy to stay connected. If staying in touch regularly satisfies both of you, establish a middle ground and put some limits on the contact. Let your kids know that you?ll be there if necessary, but don?t enable their dependency.
  6. Minimize financial assistance. Sure, you need to be responsible for basic necessities, but encourage them to get part-time jobs in high school. As your goal is to prepare them to live on their own, help them learn how to budget. If they can?t manage, boomeranging back may become the only option and everyone then pays a price.

Watching your children grow up can fill you with mixed emotions. As you face the challenges that come with letting go, it may be harder than you imagine. Recognize the fine line between support and intrusion. When your teens are grown, don?t you want them to be independent, in healthy relationships, and ready for that dream job?

November 2012 MCI Survey Comments from Industry Executive Leadership:

Depending on the market segment they represent, executives have differing points of view on the current and future outlook for the industry.

Independent, Small Ticket

?Demand remains positive going into the end of the year and we expect access to capital to continue to improve. Now that the election is over, the biggest distraction is the fiscal cliff and taxes. If these get resolved soon this should help improve business confidence resulting in more hiring and greater equipment demand.? David Schaefer, President, Orion First Financial, LLC

Bank, Small Ticket

?In the short term new business could be depressed by the uncertainty around resolution of the fiscal cliff; longer term equipment finance is well positioned for further growth as the economy continues its recovery.? James Newell, Executive Vice President, Bank of the West

Bank, Middle Ticket

?Election results, the fiscal cliff, looming tax increases, implementation of Dodd-Frank, Affordable Care Act, and the growing deficit continue to weigh heavily on timing of future capital expenditures, and extend an environment of uncertainty, volatility, and complexity. Growth and momentum in the equipment finance industry could stall going into 2013.? Russell Nelson, President, Farm Credit Leasing Services Corporation,

Why an MCI-EFI?

Confidence in the U.S. economy and the capital markets is a critical driver to the equipment finance industry. Throughout history, when confidence increases, consumers and businesses are more apt to acquire more consumer goods, equipment and durables, and invest at prevailing prices. When confidence decreases, spending and risk-taking tend to fall. Investors are said to be confident when the news about the future is good and stock prices are rising.

Who participates in the MCI-EFI?

The respondents are comprised of a wide cross section of industry executives, including large-ticket, middle-market and small-ticket banks, independents and captive equipment finance companies. The MCI-EFI uses the same pool of 50 organization leaders to respond monthly to ensure the survey?s integrity. Since the same organizations provide the data from month to month, the results constitute a consistent barometer of the industry?s confidence.

How is the MCI-EFI designed?

The survey consists of seven questions and an area for comments, asking the respondents? opinions about the following:

1. Current business conditions

2. Expected product demand over the next four months

3. Access to capital over the next four months

4. Future employment conditions

5. Evaluation of the current U.S. economy

6. U.S. economic conditions over the next six months

7. Business development spending expectations

8. Open-ended question for comment

How may I access the MCI-EFI?

Survey results are posted on the Foundation website,http://www.leasefoundation.org/IndRsrcs/MCI/, included in the Foundation Forecast newsletter and included in press releases. Survey respondent demographics and additional information about the MCI are also available at the link above.

State Parks Boating Program presents safety awards - Port Orchard ...

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission Boating Program announces awards honoring law enforcement officers around the state for outstanding performance and service.

The 2012 Recreational Boating Safety Marine Law Enforcement awards are presented each year among 50 approved law enforcement agencies throughout the state. The programs are comprised of certified police officers who perform a full range of law enforcement duties, including patrolling all waterways to enforce state laws and boating safety regulations.

The Washington State Parks Recreational Boating Program is administered by Washington State Parks to promote enjoyable, safe, environmentally responsible recreation on Washington?s waters. The program works in partnership with local and state government, businesses, non-profit organizations, citizen action groups and the boating public. State Parks? principle boating safety partners are local government law enforcement officers.

"This is the 13th year the State Parks Boating Program has presented local law enforcement officers with these awards for great accomplishments in recreational boating safety,? said Wade Alonzo, State Parks boating law administrator. ?These awards are to recognize outstanding individuals for their continued efforts to educate and enforce boating laws that are in place to reduce casualties in our state.?

The Recreational Boating Safety Lifesaving Award of the Year: This award recognizes officers whose quick and courageous actions resulted in preventing injury or death in the case of a recreational boater. Ten officers received the 2012 award:

  • Deputy Rich Poppie and Deputy Rich Schlaman of Douglas County Sherriff?s Office were honored for saving a family of three after they were thrown off their personal watercraft on the Columbia River. All three family members were struggling to stay above the water. One of the victims was not wearing a life jacket.
  • Seattle Harbor Patrol Unit?s Squad-D, including Sgt. Mike Pugel, Officer Erik Salisbury, Officer James Johnson, Officer Thomas Monroe, and Officer Mark Mulvanny from the Seattle Harbor Patrol Unit?s Squad-D were given the award for swift action that saved 12 people when two Lake Union Crew boats capsized. A Lake Union Crew coach called the harbor patrol after the crew members fell into the frigid 44-degree waters of Lake Union. None of the victims was wearing a life jacket.
  • Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) officers Dan Klump, Eric Oswald and William Smith received the lifesaving award for the rescue of two young girls during an unusual and unanticipated storm that hit Chelan County in July. The girls were on Lake Chelan when their small craft began to take on water and was on the verge of sinking. The girls were not wearing life jackets.

The Recreational Boating Safety Education Merit Award went to Pend Oreille County Sheriff?s Office for its success in increasing boater education outreach. The unit, made up of 12 certified marine enforcement deputies and a sergeant, works to support the state?s boating safety education efforts. In 2012, they conducted six Adventures in Boating Washington education courses, resulting in 50 boaters receiving the mandatory boater education card. The Pend Oreille officers continue to reach out to boaters at local boat shows, and community and scouting events.

The Recreational Boating Safety Marine Law Enforcement Program of the Year went to the Spokane County Sheriff?s Office. The department?s marine enforcement unit includes 12 boater education instructors, a sergeant, a corporal and 10 deputies. All are marine certified and work to patrol Spokane County?s waterways during the summer. In 2012, they contacted boaters and wrote a total of 937 inspections and assisted a total of 44 vessel operators. The unit, including its two civilian boater safety education instructors, conducted many public education efforts, including staffing booths at local boat shows and community events. They taught 13 Adventures in Boating Washington courses, resulting in 204 boaters receiving the mandatory boater education card.

The Recreational Boating Safety Marine Law Enforcement Officer of the Year is Sgt. Phil Johnson from WDFW, awarded for his dedication and tireless efforts in recreational boating safety. Johnson?s efforts helped to establish WDFW?s Recreational Boating Safety program as the premiere curriculum in the state.

Special service commitment awards went to Jim French and Mark Kenny of Olympia, both with the Washington State Parks Boating Program. The program honored the two State Parks employees for their long service and commitment to boating safety. French, who coordinates boating education, has been with State Parks since 1984, after having worked with the Ohio Division of Watercraft. Kenny served as an officer in the Ohio Division of Watercraft before joining State Parks in 1986. He currently coordinates law enforcement and grant funds in the Boating Program.

Manning's 2 TDs leads Broncos past Chiefs, 17-9

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? The difference between Denver and Kansas City on Sunday amounted to simple math.

Touchdowns are worth seven points. Field goals are worth three.

Well, and the fact that the Broncos have Peyton Manning slinging the ball over the field, and the Chiefs have Brady Quinn trying to run their woefully inept offense.

Manning threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, Quinn couldn't get Kansas City into the end zone for the second straight game, and the Broncos won 17-9 for their sixth straight victory.

Jacob Tamme and Demaryius Thomas had the touchdown catches for the AFC West-leading Broncos (8-3), while Knowshon Moreno added 85 yards rushing in place of Willis McGahee, who went on injured reserve this week with a knee injury.

Jamaal Charles ran for 107 yards for the Chiefs (1-10), who were done in by penalties, missed opportunities and a conservative approach that has not yielded a touchdown since the first quarter against Pittsburgh on Nov. 12, a span of more than 11 quarters and 173 minutes.

Quinn was 13 of 25 for 126 yards and an interception.

Manning, having one of his best seasons after missing all of last year with a neck injury, broke a tie with his boss and Broncos vice president John Elway with his 149th win as a starting quarterback. He trails only Brett Favre, who won 186 games during his career.

The Chiefs pursued the 36-year-old quarterback in the offseason, but never so much as received an opportunity to speak with him before Manning signed a five-year deal with Denver.

Now, the Broncos are flying high and the Chiefs have yet to bottom out.

Kansas City actually established a lead for the third straight game, this time after marching 55 yards and to set up Succop's 34-yard field goal, and seemed to be out-playing Denver early.

It was the first time the Broncos allowed points on the opening possession in seven games.

The Chiefs defense promptly forced a three-and-out, and after a nice return by Javier Arenas, marched to the Denver 4. But rather than go for it on fourth-and-2, coach Romeo Crennel decided to kick another field goal against a team that had scored at least 30 points in five straight games.

As if on cue, Manning finally got the Denver offense going on its final series of the half.

The four-time MVP completed five straight passes before finding Tamme on third-and-goal from the Kansas City 7 with 18 seconds left in the half. The touchdown catch, on which Tamme dragged Eric Berry into the end zone, gave the Broncos a 7-6 lead.

Matt Prater missed his second field goal try of the game early in the third quarter ? the Broncos kicker may have been Kansas City's most valuable player ? and the Chiefs went 46 yards to set up Succop's 49-yarder, giving his team their first second-half lead this season.

It didn't last long.

Manning, who went over 3,000 yards passing earlier in the game, rode the legs of Moreno into Chiefs territory. That's when he lobbed a pass over nickelback Jalil Brown and into the hands of Thomas for the go-ahead, 30-yard touchdown reception.

The Chiefs twice had chances to overcome the 14-9 deficit late in the fourth quarter, but they failed to move the ball after taking over at their own 37, and then after getting it back, punted on fourth-and-6 at the Broncos 47 after a series of penalties ruined the drive.

Denver tacked on a field goal by Prater in the closing seconds.

More than 350 African migrants intercepted off Italy

ROME (Reuters) - Italian coastguards said they had intercepted and picked up 358 African migrants attempting to reach Italy in two overcrowded vessels on Saturday.

Two hundred and thirty-five of the migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were travelling in a rickety wooden boat and the other 123 were spotted on a rubber dinghy, said the coastguards.

A coastguard spokesman, who was unable to give any information on where the vessels departed from, said the migrants were all in decent health and were being transported to reception centres.

Italy has borne the brunt of clandestine seaborne migration to southern Europe that has ebbed and flowed for several years. Migrants say they are attracted by the prospect of a better life in Europe.

Most migrants risk the voyage across the Mediterranean Sea in small and overcrowded fishing boats. Thousands have died as a result of shipwreck, harsh conditions at sea or a lack of food and water.

Sarkozy in court over illegal donations suspicions

PARIS (AP) ? Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has arrived at the courthouse to answer questions about suspicions he illegally accepted donations from France's richest woman to fund his 2007 election campaign.

A judge in Bordeaux on Thursday will decide whether the 57-year-old Conservative will be charged with taking advantage of the 90-year-old L'Oreal heiress, Liliane Bettencourt. Sarkozy has consistently denied all allegations.

Bettencourt's former accountant told police that she handed over ?150,000 ($192,000) in cash she was told would be passed on to Sarkozy's campaign treasurer. In July, a magistrate ordered the seizure of Sarkozy's diaries.

That's what Dellarobia Turnbow encounters on her way to a tryst in a hunting shack with a 22-year-old named Jimmy (?you wouldn't wreck your life for a Jimmy,? she thinks ruefully).

In Barbara Kingsolver's new novel, Flight Behavior, climate change has interrupted the migratory patterns of monarch butterflies, causing them to set down in Appalachia instead of the mountain in Mexico where the insects have always congregated.

Dellarobia, who wasn't wearing her glasses because they were too unsexy, sees the butterflies first as a ?vale of fire:? ?[T]he mountain seemed to explode with light. Brightness of a new intensity moved up the valley in a rippling wave, like the disturbed surface of a lake. Every bough glowed with an orange blaze. ? Trees turned to fire, a burning bush.?

Taking it as a sign, the 27-year-old mom of two turns around and marches back down the mountain to reclaim her life.

Her husband, Cub, thinks they're a miracle; her father-in-law, Burley, regards them as a nuisance; and her mother-in-law, Hester, isn't sure what to think, especially after a doctored picture of Dellarobia as ?Our Lady of the Butterflies? goes viral.

To Ovid Byron, the entomologist who comes to town after Dellarobia's find hits the news, the change could well represent the end of days, at least for the monarch. He and his team pitch camp next to the Turnbows' barn, working frantically before a killing frost can wipe out the butterflies.

Kingsolver won the Orange Prize in 2010 for ?The Lacuna,? which traveled from Mexico to North Carolina over the course of decades and included such larger-than-life figures as artist Frida Kahlo and her husband, muralist Diego Rivera. ?Flight Behavior? is more tightly focused.

For those not eager to be hectored at in their free time, not to worry: ?Flight Behavior? is not a thinly disguised lecture about the dangers of greenhouse gas emissions (although a confrontation between Byron and a TV reporter is perhaps less climactic than planned). Kingsolver, who studied as a scientist and whose nonfiction ?Animal, Vegetable, Miracle? chronicled her family's attempt to eat locally for a year, makes her position clear, but she is telling a story first. "Flight Behavior" is by far the most accessible climate-change novel I've ever read.?

Nor is ?Flight Behavior? patronizing toward its main character.

When an officious do-gooder tries to give Dellarobia a pamphlet on ways to emit less greenhouse gas, she turns the tables, pointing out that poverty may make her one of the most carbon-neutral Americans out there. (Eat less in restaurants? She hasn't had a meal out in more than two years. Don't buy bottled water? Who'd be fool enough to pay for water when the well is just fine?) Kingsolver, who lives in Appalachia, also does a nice job detailing what lack of money in the U.S. actually looks like, as opposed to pop culture versions that put picturesque rags on middle-class life.

?After mating, the female tears off her wings and crawls in a hole to start her own colony,? Dellarobia's son Preston reads out of an old encyclopedia about the butterflies. To his mom, who got pregnant at 17 and gave up on college, that sounds pretty true to life.

?It had to mean something,? Dellarobia thinks about the visitation of butterflies, a sentiment that takes on the air of a prayer the more she regards the last 10 years of her life.

What was your favorite moment in Crazy House?

Obviously the server is not what it once was or dead as you might also call it. We might one day see it rise from the ashes but until then let us talk about great memories we've had. TF2 was released 5 years ago. A lot of us were here from the beginning and some of us came along in the middle. In 5 years we've had people have epic breakups, meet ups, hook ups, stalkers, and great games so lets hear some stories.

I pre-ordered TF2 and had just came from a bitter sweet ending with a Counter-Strike community I had long been an admin with. I was a huge fan of TFC and really hoped this game would take off like TFC did. I had the full intention of always being a server hopper and never once being a part of a community or a "regular" anywhere. Being both a long time TFC and CS player I was split 50/50 on what I thought of a respawn timer. There weren't many instant respawn servers but it always felt like the game flowed much better (vanilla TF2) with instant respawn. At the time there were two voogru servers here and I can't for the life of me remember their original names but I started playing on the server that most of the "regulars" didn't play on. I caught on fairly quick that the other server was full more often than the one I was playing on and the competition was much stronger. Not long after being there and loving the attitude of all the players and admins I signed up on the forums and you guys know the rest.

It is hard for me to decide at any point in the 5 years I've played here which was my favorite moment. But one that really stands out is very early on in the game before any class update occurred. We were playing badlands and most of us were still learning the new mechanics of TF2. I want to say it was technogeeky playing as a punching heavy (bare fists) and unfortunately I can't remember the names of the other players. A medic was pocketing him and he went on what was probably a 10 kill spree of punching both while ubered and not ubered. We won the game literally from most of everyone on the server laughing our asses off about the whole ordeal. It isn't too rare to see a punching heavy now especially with all the upgrades and unlocks. But back then it was a new concept. Nobody feared a heavy who didn't have his main gun out. Nobody knew if the left fist or right fist done more damage. In fact a lot of people were under the impression you had to keep alternating the fists to do the damage he was doing. But most of all it was a purely innocent game. It had not been around long enough for anyone to get a big head or ego about the game. It 100% fun and I believe it was the game that made me decide to donate.

I think a particular special shout out goes to Chrono who organized most of the "Regular Nights" and voogru who was on standby for those first few to make sure it went without a hitch. Those were always great nights. I remember if Chrono said regular night started at 7pm you were on at 5pm just to make sure you had your slot. Donators couldn't boot off another donator so once the server was full it was full.

If anything I regret how I treated some of you in the time we were all here. During my month of being banned I had a large amount of support and received messages from a lot of you. It was an overwhelming feeling but I couldn't help but think of how that might have been even larger had I been a better player and person to some of you. I hope some of you guys are still out there and might throw out another memorable moment too.
