I met you, fate

(Sunday, 31 March 2013 / 01:21)

Met baby just for dinner today. We went to 18 chefs again! (Oh god I'm reminded of how blur I was and paid a few bucks more for nothing... T_T) We had main course, drink, ice cream and waffle. OH-NO. It was too much for my stomach. Gah. Nevertheless, a good photo of the yummy waffle. Service was quite bad... Not sure why. It has always been good. I anticipate the new outlet in Cineleisure! :D

Was too full to have any more food so we went to walk around and chill for the day :) Walked from PS after getting a drink from Hiccup to Ion. Then I bought socks! Cutie jap socks <3 Lazy to upload photo... Check my instagram hehe. @Nuttybunny_

Chilled outside Ion until this lupsup man with his partner decided to sit so close to me, making me feel uncomfortable... GAH. Tehn we headed to food opera to camwhore a bit. (many thoughts about this. SIGH. But I will still do it my way)

YAY OR NAY TO COLOURED HAIR? :D

Headed home about 11pm. So late right... I wanted to play dance dance LOL. So that kinda marks my day.

Oh and also not forgetting my OOTD of the day :D + a Hello Kitty tote.

Why Foods and Drinks Taste Bad after Brushing Teeth | Cooking ...

Posted on by cookwithkathy

If you have no idea why we?re pondering that question today, go brush your teeth real quick and grab a drink (orange juice, iced tea, beer?anything except water). Awful, isn?t it?

You can thank sodium laureth sulfate, also known as sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) for ruining your drink, depending on which toothpaste you use. Both of these chemicals are surfactants ?? wetting agents that lower the surface tension of a liquid ?? that are added to toothpastes to create foam and make the paste easier to spread around your mouth (they?re also important ingredients in detergents, fabric softeners, paints, laxatives, surfboard waxes and insecticides).

While surfactants make brushing our teeth a lot easier, they do more than make foam. Both SLES and SLS mess with our taste buds in two ways. One, they suppress the receptors on our taste buds that perceive sweetness, inhibiting our ability to pick up the sweet notes of food and drink. And, as if that wasn?t enough, they break up the phospholipids on our tongue. These fatty molecules inhibit our receptors for bitterness and keep bitter tastes from overwhelming us, but when they?re broken down by the surfactants in toothpaste, bitter tastes get enhanced.

So, anything you eat or drink after you brush is going to have less sweetness and more bitterness than it normally would. Is there any end to this torture? Yes. You don?t need foam for good toothpaste, and there are plenty out there that are SLES/SLS-free. You won?t get that rabid dog look that makes oral hygiene so much fun, but your breakfast won?t be ruined.

Why choose debt consolidation credit cards? | Private Financial ...

There are several factors that make people choose to use debt consolidation credit cards over other debt consolidation methods. One of the reasons is that the company first tries to reconstruct your finances. Although this may not solve the problem entirely, it reduces you financial liability and gives you a better financial standing. With a good financial situation you can go for a debt consolidation loan that will ensure that you repay off all your outstanding debts at once. Also one can seek for credit services from the company that will allow you to repay all your debts slowly but surely.

What determines if going for debt consolidation credit cards?is right for you is the financial situation that you are on. The method is ideal for people who have credit card debts and other debts as well. The credit company that you work with can develop a repayment plan for you internally. The good thing about consolidating debt is that it has lower interest rates. This makes the new debt much easier to manage than the original paid off debts. This can be amounted to the fact that all of your debts are consolidated into one payment. You should employ a credit consolidating company that will ensure that the rates you are paying to your creditors are lower than the previous one. This involves a negotiation process.

Going for debt consolidation credit is also beneficial in the long run. It will increase you credit scores. Increase in credit scores is a very important party of credit repair which is essential to accessing financial credit services.

Cyprus bank's big savers to lose up to 60 percent

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? Big depositors at Cyprus' largest bank may be forced to accept losses of up to 60 percent, far more than initially estimated under the European rescue package to save the country from bankruptcy, officials said Saturday.

Deposits of more than 100,000 euros ($128,000) at the Bank of Cyprus will lose 37.5 percent in money that will be converted into bank shares, according to a central bank statement. In a second raid on these accounts, depositors also could lose up to 22.5 percent more, depending on what experts determine is needed to prop up the bank's reserves. The experts will have 90 days to figure that out.

The remaining 40 percent of big deposits at the Bank of Cyprus will be "temporarily frozen for liquidity reasons," but continue to accrue existing levels of interest plus another 10 percent, the central bank said.

The savings converted to bank shares would theoretically allow depositors to eventually recover their losses. But the shares now hold little value and it's uncertain when ? if ever ? the shares will regain a value equal to the depositors' losses.

Emergency laws passed last week empower Cypriot authorities to take these actions.

Cyprus' Finance Minister Michalis Sarris said the measures were taken to put the Bank of Cyprus on a solid footing.

"We suffered a serious blow without doubt ... but we now have a bank which is reformed and ready to assume its role in the Cypriot economy," the state-run Cyprus News Agency quoting him as saying.

Analysts said Saturday that imposing bigger losses on Bank of Cyprus customers could further squeeze already crippled businesses as Cyprus tries to rebuild its banking sector in exchange for the international rescue package.

Sofronis Clerides, an economics professor at the University of Cyprus, said: "Most of the damage will be done to businesses which had their money in the bank" to pay suppliers and employees. "There's quite a difference between a 30 percent loss and a 60 percent loss." With businesses shrinking, Cyprus could be dragged down into an even deeper recession, he said.

Clerides accused some of the 17 European countries that use the euro of wanting to see the end of Cyprus as an international financial services center and to send the message that European taxpayers will no longer shoulder the burden of bailing out problem banks.

But German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble challenged that notion, insisting in an interview with the Bild daily published Saturday that "Cyprus is and remains a special, isolated case" and doesn't point the way for future European rescue programs.

Europe has demanded that big depositors in Cyprus' two largest banks ? Bank of Cyprus and Laiki Bank ? accept across-the-board losses in order to pay for the nation's 16 billion euro ($20.5 billion) bailout. All deposits of up to 100,000 are safe, meaning that a saver with 500,000 euros in the bank will only suffer losses on the remaining 400,000 euros.

Cypriot officials had previously said that large savers at Laiki ? which will be absorbed in to the Bank of Cyprus ? could lose as much as 80 percent. But they had said large accounts at the Bank of Cyprus would lose only 30 to 40 percent.

Asked about Saturday's announcement, University of Cyprus political scientist Antonis Ellinas predicted that unemployment, currently at 15 percent, will "probably go through the roof" over the next few years.

"It means that (people) ... have to accept a major haircut to their way of life and their standard of living. The social impact is yet to be realized, but they will be enormous in terms of social unrest and radical social phenomenon," Ellinas said.

There's also concern that large depositors ? including many wealthy Russians ? will take their money and run once capital restrictions that Cypriot authorities have imposed on bank transactions to prevent such a possibility are lifted in about a month.

Sarris, the finance minister, said that foreign branches of the Bank of Cyprus and Laiki Bank in countries such as Britain, Russia, Ukraine and Romania will eventually be sold. He also said that Cypriots would seek out new markets like China and the Arab countries while maintaining good business relations with Russians, "despite their bitterness."

Cyprus agreed on Monday to make bank depositors with accounts over 100,000 euros contribute to the financial rescue in order to secure 10 billion euros ($12.9 billion) in loans from the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund. Cyprus needed to scrounge up 5.8 billion euros ($7.4 billion) on its own in order to clinch the larger package, and banks had remained shut for nearly two weeks until politicians hammered out a deal, opening again on Thursday.

But fearing that savers would rush to pull their money out in mass once banks reopened, Cypriot authorities imposed a raft of restrictions, including daily withdrawal limits of 300 euros ($384) for individuals and 5,000 euros for businesses ? the first so-called capital controls that any country has applied in the eurozone's 14-year history.

The rush didn't materialize as Cypriots appeared to take the measures in stride, lining up patiently to do their business and defying dire predictions of scenes of pandemonium.

Under the terms of the bailout deal, the country' second largest bank, Laiki ? which sustained the most damaged from bad Greek debt and loans ? is to be split up, with its nonperforming loans and toxic assets going into a "bad bank." The healthy side will be absorbed into the Bank of Cyprus.

On Saturday, economist Stelios Platis called the rescue plan "completely mistaken" and criticized Cyprus' euro partners for insisting on foisting Laiki's troubles on the Bank of Cyprus.

Electronic Health Records: Most Doctors Don't Think Patients Should Have Full Access To Their Files

2012-07-16-eh_logo.jpg

By Jeffrey Kopman

According to a new Harris Poll survey, conducted on behalf of the management consulting firm Accenture, less than one-third of U.S. doctors think patients should have full access to their own electronic health records.

As a patient, you may literally trust your doctor with your life, and the doctor-patient relationship relies on this level of trust. The relationship should be one of give and take, even if the exchange is sometimes dominated by the professional.

So it may come as a surprise that 65 percent of docs believe their patients should have only limited access to their electronic health records, and 4 percent believe patients should have no access at all.

More from Everyday Health:

Kids' Exercise May Protect Them From Bone Breaks in Old Age
Stem Cells From Amniotic Fluid May Cure Intestinal Damage in Infants

One thing is clear ? patients believe electronic medical records improve their care. According to a 2011 survey, conducted by GfK Roper on behalf of Practice Fusion, a San Francisco-based electronic health record provider, 78 percent of patients whose doctors kept electronic medical records felt that their care improved.

"Patients want their healthcare to reflect the fact we're in the 21st century," said Ryan Howard, CEO of Practice Fusion. "They want to have prescriptions sent electronically, to receive email appointment reminders and to review past diagnoses and upcoming appointments online."

?Several US health systems have proven that the benefits outweigh the risks in allowing patients open access to their medical records, and we expect this trend to continue,? said Mark Knicrehm, senior global managing director of Accenture Health, of the poll?s results.

While a majority of doctors in the Accenture survey wouldn?t trust patients with full access to their records, 81 percent said they wanted their patients to keep the records up to date, which may seem like a disconnect.

Primarily, though, the doctors are referring to updating personal information, not medical information. Almost all doctors polled think patients should update their own demographic information (95 percent), family history (88 percent), medications (86 percent), allergies (85 percent), and even some medical information, like new symptoms and self-administered test results (81 percent).

There seem to be few disadvantages to giving patients access to records and some real advantages, according to experts and commentators. So why do many doctors feel that their patients should not have full access to their electronic medical records?

Stephen Baker, author of The Numerati blog, wrote that patient sensitivity may be to blame for doctors' unwillingness to share medical records.

?This would not be a problem if we, as a society, weren't so hypersensitive to 'hurtful' words, and eager to sue in cases of errors,? Baker stated on his blog.

He used an example of a doctor speculating about his or her patient being the victim of abuse. While the patient might be offended on reading this information in their electronic medical record, the doctor might feel that it's important to document their observations. Baker concluded, ?if we want the data, we should be ready to see and accept it, even when offensive. This openness would pay off richly.?

Thomas J. Vento, MD, a family doctor in private practice in Reisterstown, Md., sees the benefits of open access to medical records, because patients can help prevent medical errors.

"It?s a great idea to give your family doctor a copy to keep in his file, but it?s also very important to have your own copy of the health journal in case of a medical emergency," Dr. Vento said. "Being an active voice in health care is an integral part of getting the best care you can for yourself and your children."

After a 2012 study found that doctors failed to read many test results when patients were discharged from hospitals, experts claimed that electronic records could help "prevent important information from falling through cracks."

"[This] problem could be solved with electronic medical records that keep track of test results and alert doctors when the results have not been reviewed," said Gordon Schiff, MD, associate director of the Brigham Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice, at the time. "Patients also can play a role by keeping track of their tests and asking their doctor about the results."

As doctors and medical institutions continue to switch to electronic medical records, and patients demand more access, the debate will continue: How much information should patients have access to?

Innovation by Asian business leaders no longer a luxury - The Nation

Home ? business ? Innovation by Asian business leaders no longer a luxury

The Nation March 30, 2013 1:00 am

Increasing globalisation is a given, with international competition likely to grow fiercer and markets even more diversified. The rise of India and China, coupled with the global economic power shift towards Asia, is reshaping the world before our very eyes. In the West, the number of jobs is falling; in the East, leaders have to learn how to manage in new markets as they expand westwards.

Technology convergence and the evolution of social media have raised the bar on customer engagement. Customers now expect an instant response to their queries - and even to be involved in the process of product development in such services as information technology and communication.

Additionally, advances in technology convergence will continue to blur the boundaries between private and working lives. More business is conducted "virtually", and power is shifting to employees - particularly the rising class of digital-knowledge workers, who can work anywhere.

However, while technological prowess can aid innovation, digital natives' over-reliance on technology and their lack of social skills make them unprepared for leadership roles. Hence talent will continue to be at a premium, and retaining employees with key skills will be a challenge.

The "youth bulge" in Asia poses significant leadership challenges. What will it take to accommodate and motivate the "me" generation that forms our next band of leaders? The hunger to capture Asia's abundant business opportunities is challenged by higher expectations, greater business risks and stronger market competition. Meanwhile, the growing scarcity of strategic resources such as water, minerals, metals and fossil fuels will cause price increases and lead to social instability.

Coupled with shorter economic cycles, hyper-connectivity and restless digital natives, the only way for companies to succeed is to innovate - not just in new products and services for customers, but also in the way they treat and motivate employees, groom leaders and conduct business. As we know, innovation is easy. Commercialising it and building organisational discipline around it is much more challenging.

While there is no silver bullet for success, Hay Group's study reveals specific organisational practices that market leaders have adopted to enable and encourage innovation. To establish and sustain a climate that is conducive to meaningful innovation, Hay Group has identified four business practices that organisations need to have:

1. Enable agility. Agile organisations are better able to respond to challenges with innovations, and capitalise on their successes. Good organisations structure their organisations for speed and flexibility.

2. Create the context. Smart innovations require a fundamental understanding of customer needs, and a willingness to risk rethinking them. Good organisations ensure that employees understand customer needs, and support new approaches to address them.

3. Broaden perspectives. New and different points of view are essential precursors to innovation. Good organisations encourage and embrace different cultural and generational perspectives, and work to broaden the viewpoints of their employees.

4. Reward collaboration. If innovation is the product of different perspectives, collaboration is the process that brings them together. Good organisations do not merely preach collaboration; they require and reward it.

"It's crucial to foster an atmosphere, environment and mechanism where people are encouraged and enabled to undertake creative problem solving, where people are not afraid of failure and are prepared to welcome and deal effectively with changes, and where people are trained and supported to undertake and manage risks with prudence," said Punyacha Teparakul, senior consultant at Hay Group.

To run globalised companies, Asian leaders must set the direction and discipline for innovation. Insights on individual leadership styles, ensuring strong leadership pipelines and so forth have been useful preludes, but they are no longer enough for sustainable success in the new economy.

Hay Group's research urges Asian firms to catch up to leading companies in the following ways:

? Develop an organisational structure that enables quick communication. This is fundamental to organisational agility, its decision-making frameworks and responsiveness to market changes.

? The Asian tradition of directive leadership will not work. Everyone is expected to lead, even if they have no formal position of authority, and Asian bosses must learn to delegate their authority and decision-making power. This, Hay found, leads to higher employee engagement and motivation.

? Create personally meaningful work. Having an innovation strategy is no guarantee of success, and the most innovative companies are interested in discretionary effort. Therefore, strategies must be decoded vertically and horizontally so that personal interests are aligned with corporate and interdepartmental goals.

"The challenge for today's leaders is to apply various leadership styles suitably, may they be coercive, pace-setting, democratic, coaching and so on, into different situations and employee groups," Punyacha said. "Leadership styles have significant impact on organisational climate and culture, which in turn has an impact on employee perception and engagement, which in turn has an impact on individual and company performance."

LEADERSHIP RELOADED

In an uncertain business environment of rapid and irrevocable change, innovation is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity. To be successful, leaders need to be adept at conceptual and strategic thinking, have deep integrity and intellectual openness, find new ways to create loyalty, and relinquish their own power in favour of collaboration.

Leading in the new normal environment will test executives' virtuosity in switching between leadership styles. To envisage and then sell a concept of customers' future needs will require an authoritative style of leadership that many leaders in Asia already exhibit. However, to encourage and enforce discipline around innovation will require a more collaborative style of leadership - this is where Asian leaders need to step up.

In addition, keen influencing skills will prove to be the key ingredient for managing productivity in the "cloud", where leaders are responsible for multifunction and cross-border teams, some of whom may not even report to them.

Finally, leaders need to tap into their emotional maturity and lead their teams to bounce back from negative feedback and failure. This calls for both emotional and mental resilience.

Building discipline around innovation has become just as, if not more, important than innovation itself. And innovating leadership is perhaps the most critical step to survival.

Asia has made great strides in leadership competencies in the past 20 years. To meet the growing demands of business here, companies have done a great job of developing and accelerating talent. Is there more to be done?

UFOs over Texas? Those were just paper lanterns from wedding

By Benjamin Radford
LiveScience

A strange sight in the Texas night sky over the weekend had many people talking about fireballs and alien invasions. But, alas, the real culprit has been identified, a much more Earthly one.

Police in East Liberty County got a 911 emergency call at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday from a person reporting "red fireballs in the sky." Responding police officers, along with a dozen locals, described seeing four orange lights moving slowly in a line high in the sky. Police scopes revealed that the objects looked like hot air balloons ? complete with flames ? but were much smaller and did not have the signature gondola at the bottom.?

Even more mysteriously, the lights were estimated to only be a few thousand feet off the ground, and yet they moved silently. No known airplane or helicopter technology could fly that low and remain so quiet. Within minutes the UFOs were gone, having disappeared into the night. They didn't fly away but instead simply blinked out of existence; some eyewitnesses thought they had vanished behind a passing cloud and would reappear at any moment, but they never did.

Even so, the sighting wasn't over: A second batch of the strange lights soon appeared, in an identical line and in a more or less identical formation, until they too vanished in the same pattern. Baffled police contacted the National Weather Bureau, the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies, though none of them could shed light on the mystery. No unusual aircraft appeared on radar, and though weather balloons had been launched earlier that day, they were not aloft in the area at that time ? and in any event did not match the UFOs description. The National UFO Reporting Center was also contacted, though they had no information to offer. [UFOs & Psychic Powers: Top 10 Unexplained Phenomena]

The Unidentified Flying Objects became IFOs when members of a nearby wedding party informed police that the floating, flaming objects were paper lanterns lit just after their ceremony. Such Chinese lanternsare made of lightweight paper and a candle that provides the heat that lifts the lanterns as well as the light that makes them glow. That explains why there was no aircraft engine sound, and the flamelike appearance. Each lantern represented a wish made by each of the guests for the new couple. The newlyweds apologized if their wish lanterns scared anyone, and the sheriff took it in stride but noted that the lanterns might pose a fire threat, and asked the public to notify police before lighting such lanterns in the future.

This is not the first time that paper lanterns have sparked UFO reports. In October 2011 over a dozen strange lights were seen in the night skies over northern Utah. The UFOs glowed a strange fiery red as they headed north at an estimated speed of about 70 mph (113 km/h), according to one witness. A nearby Air Force base was asked if they had any experimental aircraft, helicopters or planes in the sky. Officials claimed that they knew nothing of the UFO lights, and that no air-training exercises had been conducted at that time. The mystery was solved when students at a local high school mentioned they had launched 16 lanterns just before the sightings occurred as part of a ceremony.

Lights in the night sky ? whatever the source ? can easily be misinterpreted and mistaken for strange extraterrestrial craft or mysterious weather phenomenon. As always, just because you don't know what a light in the sky is doesn't mean it's unknown or mysterious. And it may just be sending newlywed wishes toward the heavens.

'We have cried enough'

President Barack Obama spoke at the White House with rows of grieving mothers behind him and publicly implored Congress to pass gun reform legislation 100 days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

"If we are serious, we will do it," Obama said, Vice President Joe Biden at his side. "We have cried enough. We have known enough heartbreak. Now, it?s time to turn that heartbreak into something real."

As the mothers of the children killed by gun violence wiped away tears, the president went on to urge the passage of background checks for gun buyers, and for loopholes to be closed for buyers who turn around and sell guns to criminals. He said 90 percent of Americans support background checks, as well as 80 percent of gun owners and 80 percent of Republicans.

The president also implored Americans to talk to their representatives in Congress if their lawmakers oppose the measures. "None of these ideas should be controversial,? Obama said.

Perhaps the most controversial proposed gun reform legislation, an assault weapons ban, was absent from the president's remarks Thursday.

Senate Democrats working on gun reform legislation recently announced that they would drop an assault weapons ban from an overall package of reform measures and put it to a separate vote as an amendment. That action is designed to boost the chances a reform package will pass, as it's expected that the ban is too unpalatable for some members, especially Democrats in gun rights states and the multitude of Republican opponents.

On Wednesday, the White House cast a positive spin on that decision, suggesting that offering the ban up as an amendment still forces lawmakers to choose sides on the issue, even if it doesn't win passage.

"I can't stand here and guarantee that it?s going to pass," White House principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said at Wednesday's press briefing, "but it is a question that 100 senators are going to ask themselves when they wake up in the morning and look themselves in the mirror about whether or not they are going to?about which side they're going to be on when it comes to voting on a ban on military-style assault weapons." He added that the president will continue to advocate for the ban.

Democrats in Congress concede separating the ban from the overall package is the best way forward.

"We want to come out with the best, the boldest common denominator that we can get," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a news conference on Wednesday when asked about the decision to separate out an assault weapons ban.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has stated plans to introduce a gun reform bill next month.

In addition to the president's talk, activities related to gun reform are taking place across the country Thursday, a day gun reform advocates have marked the "National Day to Demand Action" to end gun violence.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg?s anti-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, released two television ads Thursday featuring family members of those killed in Newtown.

Court documents released Thursday revealed, among other things, that police investigating the Sandy Hook massacre seized Samurai swords, as well as a massive amount of ammunitions, and books on guns and mental health from the home of gunman Adam Lanza.

The Charlottesville community is rallying to help a child suffering from brain cancer.

Sophie Vincent was only two years old when her family found out she was diagnosed with a stage-four brain tumor. Tuesday the community has come together to support her family in this fight.

A hundred children and their families gathered at the Charlottesville Bounce-N-Play to help raise money for Sophie's surgery coming up on Friday.

"We will have a lot of therapy and medical expenses ahead of us after that," said Jenna Vincent, Sophie's mother.

But she is hopeful that the surgery will help Sophie regain some of the functions she has lost.

"She can't really use the right side of her body right now and has some vision problems," said Jenna. "Once the tumor is no longer pressing on that spot, we will get a better Sophie!"

Jenna says having the love and support of her friends who have organized this fundraiser has helped immensely.

"They have put in hours and hours of work," said Jenna. "They are amazing friends and I am really grateful."

"We all have two year olds and we all wanted to join together to see what we could do to help them out," said Jenny Moore, one of the organizers of the event.

Moore says her goal has been to raise $10,000 for Sophie.

"It has just been such a beautiful example of people coming together to support a family who needs not only financial support but prayer support," said Moore. "Knowing there are people out there who care and would do just about anything for them."

The family has even been receiving donations from people all over the country that range anywhere from $20 to $1,000.

"It is just awesome to see people we don't even know here who want Sophie to get better and want to help our family," said Jenna. "We are very happy."

Organizers of the event say one of the most worthwhile moments of this entire fundraiser was seeing Sophie's face. Even though she was getting ready for surgery, they were excited she was able to make an appearance at the event.

(AP) ? Former CIA director David Petraeus is making his first public speech since resigning in November over an extramarital affair.

The former four-star general is scheduled to speak Tuesday night at a University of Southern California event honoring the military.

A prepared text of his speech, obtained by The New York Times, indicates Petraeus will apologize for the affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. Petraeus is expected to acknowledge that he's "regarded in a different light now" than he was a year ago and that he'll try to make amends and move forward as best he can.

The 60-year-old famed Iraq and Afghan war general retired from the military in 2011 and went on to lead the CIA. President Barack Obama accepted his resignation from the intelligence agency on Nov. 9, saying Petraeus had "made our country safer and stronger."

The affair was discovered during an FBI investigation into emails Broadwell sent to another woman she saw as a rival for Petraeus' attention ? emails the other woman viewed as threatening.

Petraeus told his staffers at the time that he was guilty of "extremely poor judgment" in the affair. "Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours," he told CIA employees in a statement.

Violent video games are a risk factor for criminal behavior and aggression, new evidence shows

Mar. 26, 2013 ? People are quick to point the finger or dismiss the effect of violent video games as a factor in criminal behavior. New evidence from Iowa State researchers demonstrates a link between video games and youth violence and delinquency.

Matt DeLisi, a professor of sociology, said the research shows a strong connection even when controlling for a history of violence and psychopathic traits among juvenile offenders.

"When critics say, 'Well, it's probably not video games, it's probably how antisocial they are,' we can address that directly because we controlled for a lot of things that we know matter," DeLisi said. "Even if you account for the child's sex, age, race, the age they were first referred to juvenile court -- which is a very powerful effect -- and a bunch of other media effects, like screen time and exposure. Even with all of that, the video game measure still mattered."

The results were not unexpected, but somewhat surprising for Douglas Gentile, an associate professor of psychology, who has studied the effects of video game violence exposure and minor aggression, like hitting, teasing and name-calling.

"I didn't expect to see much of an effect when we got to serious delinquent and criminal level aggression because youth who commit that level of aggression have a lot of things going wrong for them. They often have a lot of risk factors and very few protective factors in their lives," Gentile said.

The study published in the April issue of Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice examined the level of video game exposure for 227 juvenile offenders in Pennsylvania. The average offender had committed nearly nine serious acts of violence, such as gang fighting, hitting a parent or attacking another person in the prior year.

The results show that both the frequency of play and affinity for violent games were strongly associated with delinquent and violent behavior. Craig Anderson, Distinguished Professor of psychology and director of the Center for the Study of Violence at Iowa State, said violent video game exposure is not the sole cause of violence, but this study shows it is a risk factor.

"Can we say from this study that Adam Lanza, or any of the others, went off and killed people because of media violence? You can't take the stand of the NRA that it's strictly video games and not guns," Anderson said. "You also can't take the stand of the entertainment industry that it has nothing to do with media violence that it's all about guns and not about media violence. They're both wrong and they're both right, both are causal risk factors."

Researchers point out that juvenile offenders have several risk factors that influence their behavior. The next step is to build on this research to determine what combination of factors is the most volatile and if there is a saturation point.

"When studying serious aggression, looking at multiple risk factors matters more than looking at any one," Gentile said. "The cutting edge of research is trying to understand in what combination do the individual risk factors start influencing each other in ways to either enhance or mitigate the odds of aggression?"

What does this mean for parents?

There is a lot of misinformation about video game exposure, Anderson said, that makes it difficult for parents to understand the harmful effects. Although it is one variable that parents can control, he understands that with mixed messages about the risks some parents may feel it's not worth the effort.

"What parent would go through the pain and all the effort it takes to really control their child's media diet, if they don't really think it makes any difference? That is why it is so important to get out the simple and clear message that media violence does matter," Anderson said.

Just because a child plays a violent video game does not mean he or she is going to act violently. Researchers say if there is a take away for parents, it is an awareness of what their children are playing and how that may influence their behavior.

"I think parents need to be truthful and honest about who their children are in terms of their psychiatric functioning," DeLisi said. "If you have a kid who is antisocial, who is a little bit vulnerable to influence, giving them something that allows them to escape into themselves for a long period of time isn't a healthy thing."

Favi Entertainment HDTV Smartstick

Web connectivity in HDTVs is nothing new, whether it's built-in or added with a streaming media box. But most of these options only offer simplistic functionality with a limited selection of apps. The Favi Entertainment HDTV Smartstick ($49.99 direct) can make the smartest of TVs even brighter, bringing a nearly complete Android experience to your big screen. It lets you browse the Web, watch Netflix, and play back a variety of media formats on your HDTV, but it's held back by slow performance and a cumbersome navigation experience thanks to a clunky UI and barebones included remote. On top of that, the optional SmartStick FE02RF-BL wireless QWERTY keyboard is a must-have accessory; using the bundled remote makes navigation even tougher.

Design, Features, and Setup
A plain white plastic dongle, the Smartstick measures 3.6 by 1.3 by 0.6 inches (HWD). One end houses the HDMI connector, while a full-sized USB port and microSD card slot are on the other. Along the side are an IR input (an IR receiver is included) and a mini USB port for powering the device. Since the Smartstick has an external power source, it will work with any HDTV with an HDMI port. There are no buttons on the Smartstick?everything is controlled through the included remote, which is about the same size as the dongle, with 17 small rubber buttons. You get media playback controls, navigation arrows, and Android function buttons for Home, Back, and Menu. ?

Powering the Smartstick is a single-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor with 1GB RAM. The $50 base model comes with 4GB of internal storage,? or you can step up to 8GB for $79.99. I'd recommend the lower model, since the microSD card slot can handle cards up to 32GB. The Smartstick is Wi-Fi enabled and connects to 802.11b/g/n networks on the 2.4GHz band.

Setting up the Smartstick is relatively easy, though you will have to connect a few cables that can look a bit unsightly. Favi includes an HDMI extender cable, which is nice since the Smartstick was actually too thick to fit into the HDMI ports of some of the HDTVs in our testing lab. Next, you need to connect the included mini USB cable and power adapter, as well as the IR receiver. The Smartstick powers on automatically, and setup proceeds like any other Android device?you need to set the time and date, connect to a Wi-Fi network, and associate a Google account. Unlike other Android devices, however, you'll need to do all of this with the very rudimentary remote, which can be frustrating. If you get the $40 wireless QWERTY keyboard, which I'd argue is necessary, the process is much quicker.

Android Experience
Favi Entertainment HDTV SmartstickThe Smartstick runs Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich," but with a heavily customized skin. It resembles the interface you see on many smart TVs and connected Blu-ray players, with big icons and tabbed pages for various functions, separated into Apps, Browser, Video, Music, Photo, and Settings tabs. If you use the included remote, you'll navigate around with the Up, Down, Left, or Right arrow buttons, which is very slow. If you have the optional wireless keyboard, you can use Android's built in mouse and keyboard support, which isn't perfect, but makes navigation far less frustrating. Still, there's no multitouch or even single finger swipe support, so you'll have to click and hold the mouse button while dragging your finger around the touchpad to get around. That makes most apps, especially games, unusable. Really though, you shouldn't get the Smartstick for anything other than media playback and light Web browsing, and it performs those two tasks well. ?

You get all the same streaming services you would on any Android smartphone or tablet. These include things like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Crackle, and YouTube, to name a few. Streaming videos on Netflix or YouTube were generally smooth in my tests, though I did notice that Wi-Fi range seemed shorter than your typical smartphone or tablet. With a strong connection, I was able to stream HD video without much lag, but there were occasional stutters in my tests, both in the labs and on my home connection. It wasn't a huge problem, but playback wasn't as smooth as on a high-end Android smartphone.

The Smartstick also plays back a variety of media formats via microSD cards or USB-connected drives. For video, the Smartstick was able to handle Xvid, DivX, MPEG4, H.264, and AVI files at up to 1080p resolution. MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WAV, and WMA audio files are also supported.

Web browsing is about on par with low- to mid-range Android smartphones, which is serviceable, but can be slow to load complex sites. Flash-heavy sites can trip the Smartstick up, and I had a few force closes during testing. If you just want to browse Facebook or load up your iGoogle landing page, the Smartstick is perfectly capable of that.

Smartstick vs. Competitors
You can get the same streaming features on a Roku 3?or Apple TV, which also have far more user friendly interfaces, but you lose out on the Web browsing and app capability. Google TV devices like the Vizio Co-Star or the Sony Internet Player With Google TV?offer similar functionality with a more refined experience, but you also lose the ability to sideload your own content via microSD or USB. Those boxes are also a good deal larger and generally more expensive, but they do come with included QWERTY remotes for easier navigation.

At $50, the Favi Entertainment HDTV Smartstick undercuts competitors like the Apple TV or Roku 3, and its Android foundation makes it a bit more flexible than either. It's also a decent choice for those who can't afford high-end HDTVs with integrated Web connectivity. But unless you plan on sideloading your own media content, most would be better served by more polished Google TV devices like the Vizio Co-Star or Sony Internet Player.?

New lung cancer study takes page from Google's playbook

Mar. 25, 2013 ? The same sort of mathematical model used to predict which websites people are most apt to visit is now showing promise in helping map how lung cancer spreads in the human body, according to a new study published in the journal Cancer Research.

A team of researchers used an algorithm similar to the Google PageRank and to the Viterbi Algorithm for digital communication to analyze the spread patterns of lung cancer. The team includes experts from the University of Southern California (USC), Scripps Clinic, The Scripps Research Institute, University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York.

"This research demonstrates how similar the Internet is to a living organism," said USC Viterbi School of Engineering Professor Paul Newton, Ph.D., the lead and corresponding author of the study. "The same types of tools that help us understand the spread of information through the web can help us understand the spread of cancer through the human body."

Employing a sophisticated system of mathematical equations known as a Markov chain model, the research team -- guided by USC applied mathematicians- found that metastatic lung cancer does not progress in a single direction from primary tumor site to distant locations, which has been the traditional medical view. Instead, they found that cancer cell movement around the body likely occurs in more than one direction at a time.

Researchers also learned that the first site to which the cells spread plays a key role in the progression of the disease. The study showed that some parts of the body serve as "sponges" that are relatively unlikely to further spread lung cancer cells to other areas of the body. The study identified other areas as "spreaders" for lung cancer cells.

The study revealed that for lung cancer, the main spreaders are the adrenal gland and kidney, whereas the main sponges are the regional lymph nodes, liver and bone.

The study applied the advanced math model to data from human autopsy reports of 163 lung cancer patients in the New England area, from 1914 to 1943. This time period was targeted because it predates the use of radiation and chemotherapy, providing researchers a clear view of how cancer progresses if left untreated. Among the 163 patients, researchers charted the advancement patterns of 619 different metastases to 27 distinct body sites.

The study's findings could potentially impact clinical care by helping guide physicians to targeted treatment options, designed to curtail the spread of lung cancer. For example, if the cancer is found to have moved to a known spreader location, imaging tests and interventions can be quickly considered for focused treatment before the cells may be more widely dispersed. Further study is needed in this area.

Keeping tabs on cancer's movement in the body is vital to patient care. While a primary cancer tumor (confined to a single location) is often not fatal, a patient's prognosis can worsen if the cancer metastasizes -- that is, flakes off and travels to other parts of the body to form new tumors.

The study is part of a relatively new movement to involve physical sciences in oncology research. Mathematics probability models that interpret data from specific patient populations offer a new alternative to the established approach of relying on broader clinical trends to predict where, and how fast, cancer will spread.

Groundhog's handler takes blame for botched forecast

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? An Ohio prosecutor who light-heartedly filed a criminal indictment against the famous Pennsylvania groundhog who fraudulently "predicted" an early spring said he may consider a pardon now that the animal's handler is taking the blame.

Bill Deeley, president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle, told The Associated Press on Monday that the animal rightly predicted six more weeks of winter last month, but he mistakenly announced an early spring because he failed to correctly interpret Phil's "groundhog-ese."

"I'm the guy that did it; I'll be the fall guy. It's not Phil's fault," Deeley said.

Butler County, Ohio, prosecutor Mike Gmoser told the AP that he's reconsidering the charges in light of the new evidence and may issue a full pardon.

"Frankly, he is a cute little rascal, a cute little thing," Gmoser said. "And if somebody is willing to step up to the plate and take the rap, I'm willing to listen."

The Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, a borough about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, attracts worldwide attention each year. But the attention stretched well beyond Feb. 2 when Gmoser last week issued an indictment as winter-like weather continued across much of the nation even as spring began.

"Punxsutawney Phil did purposely, and with prior calculation and design cause the people to believe that spring would come early," Gmoser's indictment said. The penalty? Death, Smoser said, tongue firmly in cheek.

Deeley said this is the second year in a row he's misinterpreted Phil's forecast. "Remember, last year at this time it was 80 degrees and Phil had predicted six more weeks of winter," Deeley said.

Under normal circumstances, Deeley's interpretation of the forecast is infallible, as long as he clings to the gnarly, magical "Arcadian" cane while the rodent whispers the forecast into his ear. Deeley still doesn't know what went wrong, but he said the borough is nonetheless pleased to still be in the news more than six weeks later ? although there's more snow on the ground, and local schools were closed Monday.

"We couldn't have generated this much publicity with a $10,000 ad campaign," he said.

Ethiopia says foils Somali rebel plot to seize U.N. staff

By Aaron Maasho

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia's intelligence agency said on Monday it has detained eight members of Somalia's al Shabaab Islamist militant group who it accused of plotting to kidnap U.N. workers.

The arrests were the latest in a crackdown on people charged with having links to fighters in neighboring Somalia, where Ethiopia has deployed troops to support Mogadishu's battle against al Shabaab and its six-year insurgency.

The group wanted to abduct foreigners working for the U.N. World Food Programme and the United Nations Development Programme in Ethiopia and take them to Somalia to demand a ransom, the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) said.

"The eight were caught red-handed with arms as they plotted to carry out the kidnappings," NISS said in a statement.

An Ethiopian official told Reuters the group planned to carry out the abductions in a camp for Somali refugees in the Ethiopian frontier town of Dolo Ado.

Several U.N. agencies and other humanitarian organizations operate in Ethiopia's dry Somali region that borders Somalia.

The region has also been plagued by a low-key rebellion for nearly two decades, though residents now say local rebels have largely been weakened by successive government offensives.

Monday's announcement comes two months after authorities said they arrested 15 suspected militants who were accused of being trained by al Shabaab.

An Ethiopian court convicted 10 other people in January of preparing strikes on political and economic targets in Ethiopia.

Somalia's al Shabaab group has threatened to attack Ethiopia in revenge for its military interventions.

Ethiopia fought Islamist rebels in Somalia in 2006 to 2009 and sent troops back in 2011 to fight al Shabaab, opening a third front alongside Kenyan troops and an African Union (AU)mission.

The campaign in Somalia has gained ground in the past two years. Al Shabaab, which is allied with al Qaeda, withdrew from the southern port of Kismayu in September, its last major urban stronghold.

In case of fermented beverage creation methods executed by expert suppliers, the mash is first heated to specific temperatures to sanitize the mash before being cooled down to certain temperatures. This is achieved so as yeast that is put into use in fermentation can can function only as soon as the temperature is lowered. The fermentation and conditioning course of action could live through for a few days or even for a few months or years based on the type of alcohol beverage. Intel NUC review: a little desktop PC that holds big promise

Intel NUC review a little desktop PC that holds big promise

The name says it all. Late last year, Intel quietly introduced the Next Unit of Computing (NUC): a miniature, barebones desktop PC that represents a modern take on the traditional beige box. The NUC sits a mere two inches tall and comes nestled within a 4-inch square chassis. It also retails for just shy of $300. Don't let its diminutive size or price fool you, though. The Core i3 system is speedy, stable and more than capable of handling day-to-day computing tasks. Yes, it's a hell of a departure from the noisy monstrosities we lusted after just a few years ago. And it's a lot quieter, too.

Before you get too excited, though, let's temper that enthusiasm just a bit. As with any bare-bones kit, you'll need to install your own memory, storage, wireless networking components and operating system. In other words, unless you're willing to get your hands a bit dirty, the NUC isn't for you. And then there's the question of its price, which becomes a lot less tempting once you factor in the laundry list of necessary components. So, is the NUC deserving of its "Next Unit of Computing" title? Let's explore this question together.

Rihanna drops in on Chicago-area high school

BARRINGTON, Ill. (AP) ? Pop star Rihanna has dropped in on high school students in a northwestern Chicago suburb.

Barrington High School earned Friday's visit as a reward for winning the singer's "Shine Bright Like a Diamond" video contest.

The five-minute, student-produced video highlighted the school's volunteer and community service programs.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports (http://bit.ly/10wxpTC ) that the singer told students she admired their passion and volunteerism.

Rihanna showed up more than five hours late, but some in the crowd said she was worth the wait.

She also posed for photos before heading off to her Friday night concert at Chicago's United Center.

Barrington freshman Nisha Ali says "the fact that she came here and thanked us was a huge deal."
