Music major Sarah Tuttle ?13 (right in photo) received Mellon funds to research Buddhist influences on Gustav Mahler and his work. Her mentor was Sunderman Conservatory Prof. Alexander Kahn (left).
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Gettysburg College a $600,000 grant that will allow more students, especially first-years and sophomores, to undertake faculty-mentored research or creative work. The four-year grant also provides funding for course development, on-campus workshops for faculty, and integration of digital technologies into coursework and scholarship.
?The grant builds on two previous Mellon grants. In 2006 the Foundation awarded the College seed money for a pilot summer faculty-mentored research program. An additional $500,000 grant over five years expanded the successful program from 2008-2012 and supported faculty in mentoring course development. Ten Gettysburg students conducted summer research projects with Mellon support this past summer.
?Once again, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has made an extraordinary investment in a Gettysburg College education,? said College President Janet Morgan Riggs ?77. ?This grant supports our goal to deepen the intellectual engagement of our students and to provide a rich and active learning experience that will prepare our students well for their lives beyond Gettysburg.?
The impact of the past support is plainly evident each spring, when hundreds of students, many of whom received Mellon funds for their projects, share their work with the campus community at a full-day colloquium, comprising poster sessions, academic talks, and creative performances. Students also attend or present at domestic or international conferences in their fields throughout the year.
?With support from The Mellon Foundation, the College has made great strides in expanding undergraduate research and creative work from the province of the natural sciences to the arts, humanities, and social sciences,? Gettysburg College Provost Christopher Zappe said. ?Not only are more students submitting proposals for research or creative work, but more faculty are eager to mentor them through their projects,? Zappe said. ?There is more activity and it is more inclusive.?
The Mellon grant will also help faculty create or redesign courses to be more discovery-based and to engender student interest in projects earlier in their academic careers. An International Bridge Course will be developed to help integrate study abroad more seamlessly into students? academic programs. Gettysburg?s Instructional Technology staff will design workshops on developing digital projects for use in classes or student-faculty collaborative research.
Much of the funding is dedicated to providing opportunities for active learning, one?of five goals of Gettysburg Great, The Campaign for Our College. The comprehensive fundraising campaign will increase support for student scholarships, active learning opportunities like research and internships, faculty and teaching, a renovation of Plank Gymnasium, and the Gettysburg Fund.
Founded in 1832, Gettysburg College is a highly selective four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences with a strong academic tradition. Alumni include Rhodes Scholars, a Nobel laureate, and other distinguished scholars. The college enrolls 2,600 undergraduate students and is located on a 200-acre campus adjacent to the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania.

I?ve been lucky enough to have generally decent experiences with Apple?s new Maps app. I?ve had my share of quirks, but the data is definitely ?right enough? in my areas for me to use it as my primary mapping tool.
But, every once in a while, I still find myself wanting to check to see if a restaurant or store is really where it says it is. So I use the Google Maps web app from my home screen once in a while. The frustration with that is that the app launches from the home screen with the Safari browser chrome still attached, which takes up space that could be used for more maps. And it uses Google?s web app icon, not the old classic iOS 5 Maps app icon, which I like a lot better.
Well, web developer Ben Guild felt the same and way back in July, he designed two special installable web profiles (mobile configurations) for the iPhone and iPad that will install the Google Maps web app to your home screen with the original iOS 5 icon and launch the apps full-screen. And they?re super easy to get running, just tap a link and hit the install button on the profile.
Here?s what the icon will look like and a comparison shot of the web app running from Guild?s shortcut vs. from the standard web clip:
?
To install the profiles, visit Guild?s blog here and click on the appropriate link for your device. Enter your passcode and you?ve got a fullscreen, original icon Maps app ready to go.
Thanks to Diego Torres for pointing out this easier method to me, as I went and used Apple?s developer tools to package a native version of the app, which was kind of a pain.
The wallpaper, by the way (because I know you?re going to ask, as it?s gorgeous) is by Marc Edwards of Bjango.

Please check this article "Enterprise Risk Management for Higher Education Institutions". It's unique and I've prepared it exclusively for your blog, hope you'll consider.
Thanks, Katheryn
Thanks, Katheryn. ?Here it is:?
Enterprise Risk Management for Higher Education InstitutionsEnterprise risk management is essentially a process that is used by businesses and organizations to minimize risks and maximize opportunities. Most organizations use a common outline to create an effective risk management plan. This plan is created to achieve three key goals; identify the organization?s objectives, identify the events or circumstances that put the organization?s objectives at risk or that help the organization reach its objectives and determine the likelihood and impact of these events or circumstances. This type of planning puts businesses and enterprises ahead of their own game. Once a strategy has been created, a risk management team is usually charged with monitoring business activity and reviewing analytical reports to make sure it is working. Risk management strategies also provide organizations with contingency plans for specific potential risks. In addition to helping an organization meet its objectives, enterprise risk management also helps protect and increase a business or enterprise?s value for owners, employees, customers and clients.Because a poor risk management plan can literally mean the demise of an organization, it is highly important that higher education institutions focus on creating a solid strategy that will protect and increase their value to students and faculty. Universities are very large enterprises that are comprised of various sub-schools and programs, so even though the common risk management outline should still be used, university officials must tailor their plans to cover the specific risks and opportunities of each sub-school and program. The term ?sub-school? refers to the separate colleges that make up a university; for example, a college of arts and sciences or a college of medicine. Many universities are also home to several research and public outreach programs that are not specifically related to student education, as well as athletic programs, student health departments, libraries, museums, student organizations, media production and administrative departments. This is an overly simplified list of what makes up higher education institutions, and it still shows just how extensive the system is and how great the potential is for both risks and opportunities. There are many fronts to cover, in terms of higher education risk management. Two of the most important topics, though, are the health and safety of students, faculty and staff. To manage these risks, universities should implement policies, programs and contingency plans that are designed to promote and protect health and safety. Other topics that should be assessed for risks and opportunities on a regular basis include college and program funding, campus operations, campus infrastructure, student and faculty retention, graduation rates, professional licensing exam scores, employment rates of alumni and the local, national and global economic forecast, among more.Board members and top administrators and faculty members should work together to conduct research and analyze data and information to come up with an enterprise risk management plan that covers the needs for each individual sub-school and program, as well as the needs of the university as a whole. Because circumstances often change on a yearly basis, a review of all risk management methods and programs should be conducted on a yearly basis, as well. With a strong plan that controls the probability of risks and maximizes the realization of opportunities, universities and colleges will maintain their integrity and keep the public?s trust in them as educational and career-building institutions.Katheryn Rivas is a freelance writer and blogger who has contributed articles to numerous education resource websites.
