How?s this for a happy ending? Exactly a year to the day after Alberta Ferretti offered to design Candice Lake?s wedding dress, the model and photographer tied the knot with conceptual architect and fellow Aussie Didier Ryan in Sydney. ?I was in Milan modeling for the Limited Edition demi-couture show,? Lake explains. ?I was one of the first girls there, so following my fitting, I walked into this amazing archive space to pick a dress for the evening. I asked if I could try one on, and minutes later, Ferretti said she?d love to make my wedding dress. I just started crying!? The dress Lake picked that night?a sparkling, gold whisper?ended up being the same one she changed into, post-ceremony, for champagne and dancing.
For Ferretti, Lake embodies modern women: ?I immediately noticed not only her appearance?she is obviously a beautiful girl?but also the contrasts typical of today, where strength and romance must find a balance.? Designing her dress was Ferretti?s way of being part of the day, ?a special day for a woman I consider special.?
Lake had already, unintentionally, made a bridal debut, of sorts, on her thirtieth birthday. ?I had this long white dress on and someone handed me a bouquet, so I looked like I was marrying myself!? Lake laughs. ?Didier was standing next to me, awkwardly! He proposed two days later.?
For her real wedding dress, she went to New York to meet with Ferretti and her team, armed with references. ?I had pictures of bohemian brides, New York society women from the thirties, and then I also loved Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, so it was merging all of those.? The location of the ceremony dictated which way the dress would go?although Lake dreamed of big ball skirts fit for cathedrals, Ryan?s parents? lush garden overlooks the ocean and called for something rather bohemian and relaxed. ?The long veil was my compromise?since I couldn?t have the 30-meter train of my dreams!? she explains. Her only design requests: lace and a low back. Ferretti took this direction and created her fantasy look: A white chiffon-and-tulle dress cut on the bias and a slight chiffon drape that flutters with movement. ?The whole experience was so magical,? said Lake, ?like the perfect dream!?
