Men?s magazines don?t do them any favours, according to a study conducted in 2011. In fact, researchers found that the advice that some men?s magazines gave were uncomfortably similar to the excuses convicted rapists gave for their crimes.

While the publishing category broadly included the likes of Playboy magazine to Men?s Journal, it was found that most major men?s mags catered almost solely to heterosexual men, offering sex, health and fitness advice.

While researchers at the University of Surrey found that many of the magazines offered disturbing advice and attitudes towards sex, there were a few that stood out as offering better information about sex. Of these, Men?s Health and Men?s Fitness were the top contenders. Both run regular, informative columns offering advice about sexual issues that are often written by women.

Men?s Health is the top selling male magazine worldwide and was started in 1987 ? just as heavily muscled men were becoming the topic of advertisements. The result was a content offering that melded health, fitness and sex into one package.

In terms of their sex advice, the success of magazines like these is that they genuinely attempt to decode what women want and offer compelling content of interest to men and women alike.

According to a comment from a writer on Jezebel.com, magazines like Men?s Health might help younger guys improve their moves in bed. The writer?s 40-something female friend said she always perked up when she heard a younger guy read this type of lad mag because, ?they?re both more eager to please and more likely to listen to what I?m asking for rather than assuming that they already know everything.?

As with women?s magazines of the same vein, this kind of media pushes a body image that is almost impossible to attain which means that while there might be a positive element to them, they may leave men feeling anxious about their image ? a stark reminder that these issues are no longer just confined to women. ?
