GENERAL DUTIES

  • Assists in establishing and maintaining relationships with external entities and communities, representing the College's positions and interests
  • Serves as a liaison to one or more external organizations, representing the College and building working relationships with the leadership of these organizations
  • Plans and implements communications campaigns, working with publications staff - Develops an understanding of the concerns of external organizations and communicates these to appropriate College management
  • Plans public activities and contributes to marketing of College activities and programs to external groups
  • With College publications and editorial personnel, plans, writes, and produces publicity materials and other external communications
  • May maintain relationships with media representatives - Performs related duties as assigned.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
In addition to the general duties, the Communications and College Relations Specialist will provide essential administrative and program support and project coordination for the Executive Director for External Affairs on a wide variety of issues dealing with the marketing and promotion of the College. This includes strategic planning, fundraising, and the visitor service experience. John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), is an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice, committed to the advancement of justice and just societies. It is a public liberal arts college that enriches the entire learning experience by highlighting themes of justice across the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Located steps from Lincoln Center at the cultural heart of New York City, the College offers bachelors and masters degrees and participates in the doctoral programs of the Graduate School of the City University of New York. John Jay College is also recognized for serving a broadly diverse student population. Under the leadership of its fourth president, Jeremy Travis, John Jay College has experienced unprecedented faculty hiring, an expansion of its curricular offerings, and the opening in 2011 of a new 600,000 square foot building complete with a black-box theatre, state-of-the-art lab space for students and faculty, a moot courtroom, and a variety of virtual learning settings. As evidenced by so many on-going developments, the College offers its many new faculty and staff the opportunity to shape the future of their institution.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree and four years' relevant experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Consummate interpersonal skills, strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent phone manner
  • Ability to multitask and function effectively in a fast-paced office with little supervision
  • Ability to be flexible in response to changing priorities, exercise independent judgment as needed, and handle projects with a can-do attitude with superior results
  • Excellent writing skills and knowledge of business letter format
  • Strong oral communication skills and excellent phone manner
  • Superior project management skills preferred
  • Familiarity with major social media outlets
  • Must be well organized and detail-oriented
  • High level proficiency in Microsoft Office and Apple computer platforms
  • Must possess strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.
COMPENSATION
$42,873 - $44,552

CUNY offers a comprehensive benefits package to employees and eligible dependents based on job title and classification. Employees are also offered pension and Tax-Deferred Savings Plans. Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
