My recent trip to Edinburgh was filled with plenty of delicious food and drink. But my highlights were drinking whisky cocktails, devouring a full Scottish breakfast and having coffee in the place where J.K. Rowling gained inspiration for her Harry Potter books.
Enjoying Whisky Cocktails?
Whisky is synonymous with Scotland and I wanted to try some while we were in Edinburgh. There was just one slight problem? I don?t really like whisky. Well, at least I can?t drink it straight. For me, the taste is too bitter.
However I do like whisky cocktails. When whisky is diluted with the right mixers, I find it to be extremely tasty. This seems to take the edge of it a wee bit.
We headed to Whiski Rooms in The Mound ? a trendy recent addition to the city which has around 500 different types of whisky in stock.

It was a quiet Wednesday night but we were celebrating Andy?s birthday so we headed straight for the cocktail menu.
After much deliberation I went with ?The Kilt?. This contains Glenkinchie ten-year-old malt with amaretto.
Andy chose the ?Highlander? which consists of Glenmorangie ten-year-old malt, fresh lemon, sugar syrup, stirred and charged with ginger ale.
For our second and final round (these were some expensive cocktails) I went with the ?Rusty Nail? ? a warm whisky drink with honey flavour and Famous Grouse blended whisky, Drambuie and a twist of lemon.
Andy selected the ?Isley in the Sun? which has Botanist Gin, containing more than 20 Isley whisky botanicals, Xante Pear Cognac, apple juice and lime.
They were all very nice and I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in the bar.
Whiski Rooms has a bistro and a whisky shop on the premises. There is also a Whiski restaurant/bar on the Royal Mile which has traditional live music every night and serves some seriously beautiful food.
The Full Scottish Breakfast?
I love a full English breakfast. So I was excited to try this hearty dish with a Scottish twist. We enjoyed a full Scottish breakfast at Always Sunday on the Royal Mile (High Street).
It was delicious and featured haggis black pudding and some potato bread along with the usual ingredients such as bacon, sausage, egg and mushrooms.

Caffeine Fix at the ?Harry Potter? Cafe?
Somebody recommended The Elephant House coffee shop and restaurant to me and we decided to venture here one afternoon for a much-needed caffeine fix.
What I didn?t realise until we arrived here was that this is the place J.K. Rowling used to come in the early days to write her Harry Potter books.
She would sit in the back room overlooking Edinburgh Castle, seeking inspiration for her novels that ended up being her meal ticket.
Unsurprisingly, The Elephant House played this fact up with the slogan: ?Birthplace of Harry Potter?.
But this place was not just an ordinary cafe with a famous connection. It had a quirky, bohemian atmosphere and, most importantly, served really nice coffee along with delicious cakes.
Another stand-out characteristic is the large number of elephant drawings, pictures and models everywhere. There are hundreds of models scattered all over the place, and some of them are actually for sale.
