The world of technology is advancing quickly and it would seem that 2012 still has a lot more to give. What do the tech hotshots think about the way in which advances are moving and what can we see in the near future?

Personal computing has moved on so quickly in recent years and the world has seen some impressive technological advances that weren?t expected quite so soon! With smartphones, tablets, super thin laptops and HD screens; the question comes about as to what could possibly come next. MG Siegler (blogger and venture capitalist) is thinking along the lines of smartphones and tablets and the control that they bring to the user. He states that Microsoft may be unknowingly holding themselves back by trying to cram in the technology we know with the new stuff instead of coming up with alternatives. The keyboard for example is surely soon to be a thing of the past with speech recognition and dictation. MG Siegler is impressed with the Kinect stuff that Microsoft are going ? gesture-based computing is something to keep an eye on for sure.

Chris Pirillo (founder of Lockergnome) simply said ? the iPad.

Brian X. Chen (author of ?Always On? and reporter at The New York Times) is looking at how the computer is becoming a mobile device and the world of apps. Consumers will choose those devices that are the most capable and offer the most in terms of apps, books and music. The world of computers and technology is always changing and Chris Pirillo even speculates the idea that Facebook or Amazon may give something a whirl.

Whitson Gordon (writer for Lifehacker) doesn?t believe that tablets will be something that will catch on completely as a main device. With smaller and sleeker laptops readily available, like MacBook Air, there isn?t as much of a need for a tablet as well. The latest release coming from Microsoft will be a contender though as their new tablet, Surface, begins to bridge the gap. With a full desktop OS and an usable, physical keyboard, the tablet is pretty much a laptop in tablet form. Whichever way it goes, it?s safe to say that it looks like the standard desktop on its way out.

Technology as it is right now has a lot to offer the consumer. The number of tablets that are available is great and means there is something for everyone. Mark things this will be a more gradual thing with tablets taking over in mainstream computing in approximately five years? time as opposed to in the very near future. Mark sees the future, after the five years, as showing the world the larger tablet. Tim Stevens (senior editor at Engadget) is speaking along similar lines in the sense that he says Microsoft?s Surface tablet is beginning the process by blurring the lines between tablets and laptops with the offering of a full OS tablet. It is easy to see this being a common thing by the end of this year. Windows 8 has been updated and integrated to the latest touch sensitive technological world to make this possible.

It is safe to say that there is a lot to think about, but some of the tech hotshots out there seem to be going in the same direction. The integration of the laptop and the tablet looks set to be the future before you could have imagined. With Microsoft already doing the job to a great extent and releasing the Surface tablet in October 2012, who knows what will follow and creep into the technological world that is 2012 before the new-year begins.
